ENDA'S VANITY VENDETTA
"We will root out Twitter" Erdogan has promised.
Twitter has 500 million users worldwide and recently celebrated it's second year in it's European Headquarters in Dublin. The Taoiseach of Ireland has adopted a very different approach with Twitter, if anything, it could be called a "We will root Twitter in" policy.
To the casual observer it would appear that Taoiseach Kenny and Prime Minister Erdogan are worlds apart, but behind the 'Hail Fellow Well Met' public persona of Taoiseach Kenny lies a ruthless muzzler of free speech who could teach Erdogan more than a trick or two.
Ireland has a long and ignominious history when it comes to censorship. From the Film Censors Office to Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act, everything that the Church or State deemed beyond our peasant sensibilities was censored. Although it feels like we might have come a long way on issues such as abortion, homosexuality and gender equality, the ongoing disgrace of whistleblower vilification and the decades long concealment of secret Garda and Prison Service recordings expose that censorship is alive and thriving in modern Ireland.
I recently became a victim of censorship in Ireland following a false accusation to Twitter. My accuser was the Taoiseach of Ireland. On the 13th of March, Enda Kenny addressed the US Chamber of Commerce, Washington DC. During his address the Taoiseach stated:
"If you got a problem, if you have an issue or anxiety or concern or a proposition or proposal, I want to hear it. My number is a public number you can call me anytime"
An Taoiseach went on to explain that people in other countries:-
“find it difficult to figure out how anybody can ring up the Taoiseach and say I want to talk to you”
There was an open invitation from Mr. Kenny, open to everybody, to call him on his public number. That evening I googled Mr. Kenny's public telephone number. Three numbers were readily available on the internet listed in an online directory called redbook.ie
Kenny Enda T.D. Leader Of Fine Gael
The earliest record of Mr. Kenny's mobile number that I could find online was on a Fine Gael website from several years ago. It is an undeniable fact that the mobile number 0878114466 is a public number currently listed online and was first published by Fine Gael.
On the 15th of March I tweeted:
Now YOU too have Enda Kenny's number, don't be shy he said you could call anytime"
Despite several written appeals to Twitter, 18 days on, I remain suspended. I have e-mailed Mr. Kenny 3 times and requested that he withdraw his false report but thus far he has ignored me. I have e-mailed every TD in Leinster House twice and asked them to intervene with the Taoiseach. The only TD to commit to asking An Taoiseach why he is continuing to censor me is Clare Daly.
A tabloid paper picked up the story 2 days ago and ran a vomit inducing front page about Enda Kenny as the 'Hail Fellow Well Met' for answering his mobile phone and talking to a reporter. In the story the Taoiseach's mobile telephone number is referred to as his 'Personal' number. Twitter is very specific on what constitutes a 'Personal' telephone number - in order to be a 'Personal' number it must be 'Non-Public'. It can not be non-public when it is listed online and was published online by Fine Gael. Censorship is censorship, be it Prime Minister Erdogan or Taoiseach Kenny, in his favour, at least Erdogan is up-front about his muzzling. Where the Taoiseach's original censorship of me was vanity, his continuing censorship is nothing short of a vendetta.
All this week Enda would have us believe that between the 10th and 24th of March, a letter from the former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan wasn't important enough for a minion to notify him of it's existence and yet, a tweet I posted on the 14th of March was so earth shattering that it demanded his immediate attention 3,000 miles away in Washington. Believe the bullshit if you want to, but in any decent democracy not only would Kenny be gone but so would every moneypit backbencher who supported him.
