TWO CHEEKS OF THE SAME ARSE
A youthful-looking former schoolteacher with no personal wealth or ever a hint of corruption, Kenny may be exactly what Ireland needs at this juncture, an honest man, ready to lead a reform government which will restore the badly battered image of the country abroad and at home.
On February 7th 2011 Kenny promised "The politics of cronyism of the past 13 years must be brought to an end", within weeks it was exposed that 25 of the 166 TDs in the Dail had hired relatives to carry out administrative and other duties. These included junior ministers Ciaran Cannon and Shane McEntee (FG), Junior Enterprise Minister Sean Sherlock and Junior Environment Minister Willie Penrose (Lab).
In his speech on the Nomination of Government Enda stated that as Taoiseach -
I’m entering into a covenant with the Irish people, we make sure that ‘what was done’, will most certainly not be done again.
Values of self-awareness, compassion, integrity, respect, dignity, kindness, courage, generosity, affection, authenticity, hope and especially – truth and trust.
The John McNulty Seanate controversy rages on and it looks like it could be the stroke of strokes by the time the votes are counted. Enda has done nothing to purge the party of cronyism. He has waffled and dodged at every opportunity in a display worthy of the Bertie Ahern Award for Gobbledygook and Bullshittery because he is loath to admit the truth. That reluctant truth best expressed by Hilary Quinlan when he was pressed for an answer -
You tell me one party out there who doesn’t look after their own. I don’t see anything wrong with it. It’s politics.
